There have been several discussions recently about punishments, their use, effect and when they might be appropriate and during these I touched briefly on the submissive masochist.
Now for those that aren't sure what a masochist is, they derive pleasure from receiving pain. And this is where the whole punishment thing gets cloudy, how exactly do you punish someone who enjoys pain? Some people seem to think it just means harsher punishment but in my experience this isn't correct. In fact a common trait of a true masochists is they will often try to push themselves too far and as a Dom you need to be extra careful not to exceed safety limits with them. This can be even worse with subs that thrive on praise and pleasing, they simply do not want to disappoint.
Of course there are widely varying levels of pain and methods of inflicting it which can be very different from one person to the next. There is also the problem of how to name these pain inflicting games or tasks, I prefer to use the term "tortures" to differentiate them from punishments. Designing an appropriate torture for a masochistic sub is a totally personal thing, do they prefer purely sexual based tasks involving only genitals or tits and nipples or do they enjoy more general pain such as contorted positions or pain to the feet or knees for instance? How long can they endure and how intense is the pain of each torture, do they enjoy lasting reminders such as bruises or other marks?
Backing all this is the constant need to ensure safety, making sure nothings gets out of hand or causes a permanent injury.
I would like to hear from submissive masochists, what are your experiences (not specifics), have you ever gone too far to please, is pain alone enough or do you combine it with other pleasures? Do you find doms don't get you and your needs, do you prefer to self administer? Have you found this confusion with punishment to be a problem?
